Small Steps – Big Brother Big Sister 2013, Casiguran, Aurora, Philippines

BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER

If you are reading this on a weekday, consider yourself lucky. First, you can read. Second, most likely, you are clean and dry.

In another part of the country this very same day, a wide-eyed Marian in ponytails has woken up before the roosters crowed, has trudged through mud, crossed streams on barefoot and arrived hours later with wet muddy legs to attend a small community school.

This is a day in the life of Marian. Never mind the muddy trails, there are those who have it this tough to learn to read and write, only to be deterred by the lack of school materials to get through even one semester.

The Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) Community Outreach Program in the Philippines is here to help children from deprived families stay in school to keep parents from worrying where to get money for a school bag, notebooks or a mere pencil. On May 18 – 19, 2013, BBBS sponsors and volunteers will carry school supplies, trudge through the same trail as Marian and hand them to the Dumagat children in Casiguran, Aurora Province.
